Not much.

Although recently, offside rules about crossing the red line in the neutral zone have changed. Offside is only called for violations over the blue lines on either side of the neutral zone.

Equipment has obviously changed as well. It was not mandatory to wear helmets in the NHL until the 1979-80 season for players entering the league. Veteran players could continue to go bareheaded. 1973 marked the last appearance of an goalie without a mask in an NHL game. Sticks were originally completely straight, making it harder to pass and shoot, but in about the 1960's the blades took on a curved shape. Pads were also made of entirely natural materials in the past, but now they're all made of lighter, more breathable synthetic materials.

The players are coming more from Europe than from before, most of them were from Canada. They're also much bigger, faster, and stronger.

Hockey as we know it nowadays is completely different from like almost 10 years ago.

There have been plenty of rule changes, like for example hits to the head, 10 years ago, you get hit in the head with someones shoulder, you get up, if you feel groggy go to the bench and your coach will tell you to keep your head up, if not continue playing. In today's modern version of hockey, you get hit in the head with someones shoulder, instant penalty and suspension. Then you get frowned upon from the entire hockey industry all because you caught someone with their head down.

In my view hockey players today are much more weak compared to when I played hockey. More rules, more suspensions all for the stuff we got away with 10 years ago and more. Today's rules are governed by "parents" not the NHL or AHL or any other league, its the parents of the kids who get hurt playing hockey. To me its a risk you take stepping upon that ice. If you get hurt, you knew it was coming eventually.

The basic rules are still in effect but the equipment as well has gotten way too big for my liking. When I played the equipment I wore was no thicker than a picture frame. Now they all look like football equipment, more than you actually need, if you know how to play you don't need 50 pounds of equipment.

The speedy players that play now, just imagine how much faster they would be 50 pounds lighter, sure they say they are light wieght and everything but still you move like the Tin Man out there due to the size of your equipment.

In my view the game has changed alot and I would go on and on but it would seem like I am repeating myself about halfway through this reply.

Just do a little bit of research and you will found out for yourself how much the game has changed and how much more ridiculous it is now compared to the days of players like Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hall, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hall, back when the game of hockey was played by men, not pussies like today.

Hockey really wasn't developed until about 1895 or so. The basic rules are much the same but have been changed and refined over the years. The same is true for the equipment. Basic equipment is the same but has been improved with new materials and technologies as they have become available over the years.

Hockey was started in the basement of a YMCA in Canada by some kids who wanted to skate because a pipe broke and the water froze. They used brooms as sticks and used a frozen cow feces as their puck.

I am not a hockey fan much but I would say by all the fighting and all violence also by all the new equipment.By the equipment less goals got in because of the size of them.
