Jacques Plante was a Canadian professional ice hockey and Hall of Fame goaltender. In the National Hockey League he played for the Montréal Canadiens, the New York Rangers, the St. Louis Blues, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Boston Bruins. In the World Hockey Association he played for the Edmonton Oilers (later of the NHL). He ended his illustrious career with the Oilers. Plante was the first goalie to wear a mask. He is also renouned for being the first to regularly leave the crease, the area in front of the net, to play the puck and direct his forwards. His No. 1 jersey was retired by the Montréal Canadiens 1n 1995, a year after his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
