Since 2011, the minimum seating capacity required for an NHL team has been 15,000. This was due to the Atlanta Thrashers moving to Winnipeg (15,004 for hocky) and the Islanders eventual move to Brooklyn (15,813 for hockey).

Firstly a rink is called an "Arena" The maximum capacitie varies upon city (Montreal 21,000) but the average is about 18,000-19,500

there are 30 arenas that NHL teams play in right now but there use to be other arenas for old teams or the team got a new arena
