The rules of cricket are commonly referred to as "The 42 Laws of Cricket", established by the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) A detailed description in each of the laws is given, and they are broken into a number of sections:

  • Players and Officials
  • Equipment and Laying out of the pitch
  • Structure of the game.
  • Scoring and Winning
  • Mechanics of Dismissal
  • Ways to get out
  • Fielders
  • Fair and unfair play

In addition to these laws there are the five appendices which are:

  • Appendix A - Specifications and diagrams of the stumps and bails.
  • Appendix B - Specifications and diagrams of the pitch and the creases.
  • Appendix C - Specifications and diagrams of the gloves.
  • Appendix D - Definitions.
  • Appendix E - The bat.
