I don't see any connection to the gridiron sport, but as a sort of generalization the Christmas Star or Star of Bethlehem is drawn with eight points. The design has grown popular in recent years as a borderline religious custom that is not directly religious- but gets the idea of the Supernatural across. a similar design is the also eight pointed Compass Rose. Do NOT confuse with the Maltese or Iron cross which also has eight points! The Christmas star is usually drawn with eight points. The heraldic star of Brabant is similar ( one was worn by Queen Marie of Romania). This was a heraldic decoration, not anything religious.

If you meant "corners" as points, the Star of Bethlehem was always regarded as an 8-Pointed star. In Greek, writing the name of Christ sums up to 888. All baptismal fonts have 8 corners.

The five points on an Eastern Star symbolize the five points of the star in the biblical story of the Star of Bethlehem, representing the qualities of virtue, wisdom, loyalty, faith, and love. These values are central to the Order of the Eastern Star, a fraternal organization that promotes friendship, charitable work, and personal growth.

The story says that the wisemen visited Jesus in Bethlehem, but does not say anything beside that it was a very bright and shining star. Some say it was a comet. But the flag of Isarael has a six pointed star. The star was to far away to coint the poimts for sure.
