It depends on the age level:
Middle school usually plays best out of 3 sets; in the first two sets, 21 points are needed to win and the 3rd set plays to 15 points. (So, either 42 or 36 points are needed to win a match.)
High school freshmen and JV teams play two games to 25 and a third to 15 if needed. (So, either 50 or 40 points are needed to win a match.)
High school varsity and all college teams play to 25 points except for the fifth set, which is played to 15. (So, either 75 or 65 points are needed to win a match.)

you need 25 points to win in a volleyball game, but you have to win by 2 points

in junior high, high school and junior olympics, you need 25 to win, but you must win by two or if it is the third game in a match, there is only 15.
10 points for beach volleyball as long as you win by 2 points. court volleyball, junior varsity goes to 20 and varsity goes to 25, but you still must win by 2.

The timer is used in Basketball. it doesn't matter how many points you score in a game. you just want to score more than your opponent before the buzzer sounds. (timer runs out)
In regular volleyball it usually goes to 25 and you have to win by 2. In beach volleyball the first 2 games in a match go to 21 and the third if necessary goes to 15.
