5 players are allowed on the court at a time. For a team you can have from 5-as many as you want. Of course if you only have 5 players it will become very tiring, that's why it would probably be smart to have more than that.
Unless you're playing a random pick-up game. You can as many as you want for that. a one on one, two on two, three on three andd so on.
well technically you only need two to play one-on-one. but if you want to play a regulation game you need 10 total. 5 on each team. but any even number of players can start a game. or an uneven number of players can play 21. that is just a game where everyone is playing against everyone else and the first person to score 21 wins the game.
