How many players allowed on the NHL bench during game?

there are normally 5 skaters plus one goaltender for each team out on the ice at one time. the skaters are broken down by position. there are 3 forward positions (left wing, center, right wing) and two defensemen (left defensman, right defensman). on an NHL roster, teams are allowed to dress 18 skaters plus two goaltenders per game.
