In the Majors, 25 from opening day until the end of August. That usually includes 5 starting pitchers, 6 relief pitchers, 8 starting position players, one extra catcher, and five bench players who can pinch hit, pinch run, become defensive substitutes in the later innings, and generally back up the starting position players. In September, the teams can expand their rosters up to 40, (to give some of the top minor league prospects whose seasons have ended a shot to play in the "bigs"). Playoff teams must reduce their roster back to 25 in October, and all of their players needed to be roster players for the team by Aug.1 to be eligible to play in the playoffs.

The teams have a 40 man roster. There are 25 players on an MLB team's active roster.

But you can have 5 more players on the occasion if someone gets injured

At one time, only 9.
