There have been deaths in various European leagues. However, in the NHL there has been only one. On Jan. 13, 1968, in a game between the Oakland Seals and the Minnesota North Stars, Minnesota player Bill Masterton was checked and fell to the ice causing a severe head injury. He was taken to hospital but never regained consciousness. He died two days later on Jan.15/68. Not as much as Baseball.
