The Dallas Cowboys have had eight head coaches: Tom Landry (1960-88); Jimmy Johnson (1989-93); Barry Switzer (1994-97); Chan Gailey (1998-99); Dave Campo (2000-02); Bill Parcells (2003-06); Wade Phillips (2007-10); and Jason Garrett (2010-present). Garrett is the first former Cowboys player to be named head coach of the team.
Although the Dallas Cowboys have never had an African-American head coach, the team has had numerous black offensive and defensive assistant coaches through the years. One of them, Todd Bowles, was Dallas' secondary coach from 2005 to 2007. He is now the head coach of the New York Jets.
One of the highest-ranked members of the Cowboys' front office is Will McClay, the team's assistant director of player personnal. His input before, during and after the 2014 NFL college draft helped the team land such promising players as offensive lineman Zack Martin and defensive contributor DeMarcus Lawrence and Anthony Hitchens. McClay, who was head coach of the Arena League's Dallas Desperados from 2004 to 2008, loomed as a hot candidate in 2015 as a general manager for an NFL team.
