Well if you want to look up the dimensions of a volleyball court, you can get the exact measurements to answer your question. The easiest answer is... as long as you serve behind the service line (the line behind you, going parallel to the net), you are good to go. If you want to get as close to the net as possible, then you would want to put your planted food right in front of the line. As long as you don't actually touch the line, you are free to serve as close as possible to it.

From the baseline to the net, a tennis court is about 21 feet. This gives the person plenty of space to jump around in.
