I think the University of Alabama in Tuscalusa, Al still holds the record of 14 National championships. They haven't won it in a long time though so someone may have taken the record from them.
The University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are tied with 8 titles each since the beginning of the poll based national championship. By conference, the SEC has won 18 since 1937, tying with the Big 12 conference. Since the inception of the BCS game, Louisiana State University, (LSU) 2003 & 2007, and the University of Florida, 2006 & 2008, are tied with 2 each. Since BCS, the SEC leads with 6 wins with 6 appearances. The second conference is the Big 12 with 2 wins of 7 appearances.
116 national championships since 1895 in football. However most teams don't count their national championship pre ww2!
Princeton has the most "national championships" in history with 26 recognized titles (although Princeton claims 28). Since the "poll era" began in 1936, Alabama leads with 10 recognized "national championships" (although Alabama makes dubious claims to many other titles during the same span).
The University of Nebraska, also, they are the best college football program by the numbers and the tradition and passion the fans and players show. Nebraska has 5 national championships.
None since the BCS determines the national champion.
