First of all it's kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is when something is in motion. The football would be in motion when it is in the air. It would also have potential energy. Potential energy is when an item is about to have kinetic energy, or when your about to throw the ball.

During a pass, a football's mechanical energy is potential energy. Mechanical energy is "potential" for any object in motion that is not moving itself (the football is displaced by the player).
ex: mechanical energy * a running person * moving windmill * person throwing a ball ex: electrical energy * t.v * computer * toaster
When a boy kicks a football, the mechanical energy from his leg muscles is transferred to the football, causing it to move. Some of this energy is converted into kinetic energy as the football gains velocity, while other energy is converted into sound and heat energy due to friction with the ground and air resistance.
A kicking football is essentially a brand new football that is fresh out of the package. A throwing football is a "broken in" ball that is more used and easier to handle.
Im pretty sure they were throwing before they were running throwing has always been a technique in football but both ways of the game have new plays and new ways of throwing and running the balll.
potiental energy
Motors convert electrical energy to mechanical energy. Generators transfer mechanical energy to electrical energy.
The sum of potential energy and kinetic energy is equal to the total mechanical energy of a system. Mechanical energy = Potential energy + Kinetic energy.
a mechanical energy is a kind of energy
No you can not score from a throw in.
Tricept
Mechanical energy is the combination of kinetic energy and potential energy.
