The home team is the team that has a better overall record.
However, there has yet to be a home field advantage because of the Super Bowl location being predetermined and no team yet making it to their own home turf for the Super Bowl.
There are a total of 32 teams in the entire league. Only the top 12 teams in the NFL can make it into the NFL playoffs (top 6 teams in each conference). There are 2 conferences, the American Football Conference (aka AFC) and the National Football Conference (aka NFC) with 6 teams in each conference in the playoffs (which makes a total of 12). The format for the NFL playoffs is Wildcard (first round) games, then the Division (2nd round) games, then the AFC/NFC Conference (3rd round) Championship games and then the Super Bowl (1 team representing the AFC and 1 team representing the NFC, playing each other for 1 world champ. trophy). Each round is an elimination round (meaning if a team loses in a game in the playoffs, their seasons over). You win a game, you move onto the next round. top 4 teams (teams that are ranked #1 or #2 in each of their respective conferences) with the best records in the NFL GET FIRST ROUND BYE! (meaning they skip the Wildcard round and go straight to the division round and also get home field advantage through out the entire playoffs). If a team is NOT the top 4 teams in the league, In order to get home field advantage is to have the best record in their division/region (Southwest, North, West etc.) the wildcard is played by 8 teams (4 from the AFC and 4 from the NFC, the winning teams move onto the AFC/NFC Division round) the division round is played by 8 teams (4 from the AFC and 4 from the NFC, the winning teams move onto the AFC/NFC conference champ games) the conference champ games is played by 4 teams (2 from the AFC and 2 from NFC, only 1 from each conference can move onto the superbowl, the 2 winnings teams move onto the big game) the super bowl is played by 2 teams (1 representing the AFC, the other representing the NFC, winning team wins the trophy) that's how the NFL determines the 2 teams that get to play in the super bowl :)
The Atlanta Falcons were the home team for Super Bowl XLI.

49ers
There has never been a team to play a Super Bowl on their home field. The closest was Super Bowl XIV when the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Los Angeles Rams at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. and Super Bowl XIX when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins at Stanford Stadium. The NFL awards the Super Bowl to a city four years in advance. If a team won their conference championship and the Super Bowl was scheduled on their home field, the game would go on as planned.
Technically one team is designated the home team for the game, but I think you mean if a team can play in its own stadium for the Super Bowl. The answer is yes, the team from the host city must make it through the playoffs to the Super Bowl.
