Netball is a fast paced game in which the aim of the game is to work as a team to get to your goal post and score a goal. In netball there are many different positions to play and each position has a different role to play in the team to help score and stop the other team scoring. There are 14 players on a court at anytime (7 from each team) then there are the umpires. The positions go as followed, Goal Shooter (GS) - is one of only two people able to shoot and score a goal form their team, Goal Attack (GA) - The other person able to shoot and score..this player has more running to do as they aren't as limited as the shooter and is also used to get the ball from one end to the other of the court, Wing Attack (WA) - is a crucial player as they are the player who is mainly used to get the ball to the goal, Wing Defence (WD) - This player is used to defend and stop the WA getting the ball and gets the ball back to their team, Centre (C) - This player is both defence and attack but is mainly used for getting the ball form the defending side to the attacking side...this player must be very fit and able to run alot, Goal Defence (GD) - This player defends the GA and is also able to defend the GS if needed, this player needs to get the ball off the other team get get it back from the opposite goal post to their teams post, Goal Keeper (GK) - Defends the GS, stopping the shooter getting a goal. Each player has certain areas they are allowed to go in and aren't allowed in. The court is split into thirds with each end third having a semi-circle with the goal post in it. The middle third has a small circle where the centre starts off with the ball. The game is also split but into quarters. The quarters are 10-12minutes long with a 1, 2, or 3 minute interval. Basic Rules - When you have the ball, you aren't allowed to move with the ball (that is called stepping). You aren't allowed to defend within' 3 feet of the player, so you must be 3 feet away from the player before defending (this is called obstruction). You cannot contact other players (major contact - minor contact is allowed but you aren't allowed to touch the ball if another player has it in their hands. Don't think netball is a sissy game cos' no contact but in actual life netball is really a full-contact game as if the umpires don't see... There is LOADS of shoving and pushing and dirty play. you have to be sneaky ;) ) Not following this rule is called contact. From the centre pass you have to get the ball within' the middle third. You must touch the ball at least once in each third or else its a free pass to the other team called over a third. eg. You get the ball from the opposite team in their goal circle and throw it straight over everyone into your goal circle. That is NOT allowed you have to touch in the middle third before getting it in the goal third. Most of the rules if broken result in a free pass to the other team. The older you/ the higher you are in the competion, the tougher the rules are. There are other smaller rules that you will learn over time too. Be patient and enjoy yourself when playing this magnificen game and you'll have fun, make friends and get fit. (:
