a tip off. Typically the ref throws the ball in the air between two centers and the centers try to get the ball. Then who ever wins the ball gets to go first. Then the team that didn't win the tip off, gets the ball in the beginning of the 2 and 3rd quarter and the team who won the tip off get it in the 1st and last quarter.

A game of basketball starts with what is called a 'jump ball'. Two players will stand in the circle at the center of the court. One of the referees will toss the ball up in the air between the two players. They will jump up and try to tip the ball to one of their teammates, And then shoot to the basket, If its possible to win. :)

A Basketball game begins with a tipoff. A player from each team goes in the middle of the court, and they both try and tip the ball to one of their teammates when the ref throws the ball up. This gives each team a fair chance to start with the ball.
