Rules in a backyard game are not usually the same as a professional game. The main difference is the game and how and why its being played. Usually backyard games are geared toward fun and a good time. Also the you don't always have the correct number of people and have to bend or change the rules. The is also not a rule keeper of referre to make sure that the rules are enforced.
What happened was that at the time it was called football but it was actually played like soccer. When they changed the rules to football (which then made it more like rugby), they kept the old football rules and just called that sport soccer.
