The proper depth to dig in order to install a Basketball backboard depends on the type and brand of backboard. Some require the hole to be 30 inches, some 36 inches, and others 48 inches. Some people suggest digging a bell-shape at the bottom to make the cement extra secure from working its way out. This is also supposed to make the pole more rigid.
To install a Saskatoon (saska) pole for basketball, dig a hole 3 feet deep and roughly 18 inches in diameter, set the pole in the hole, and fill it with concrete. Ensure the pole is level and allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before mounting the backboard and hoop.

Look in the manual that usually comes with your hoop ( if you haven't already done so I just don't know what to say). Otherwise, search for your basketball hoop's model # (usually on the box, manual, and sometimes on the hoop) and look for instructions( more detailed than the manual) to set up your basketball hoop on your basketball hoop's brand at a website.
