How do you play footbal?

"Football" can refer to a number of different sports, particularly two: American football and association football, or soccer. Both are fairly simple in outline, and have some further technical details if you are really concerned about that kind of thing.

Both of these forms use a rectangular field, longer than it is wide by around 1.5:1 to 2:1.

American football

11 people (or the same number for each team, depending on how you like it) begin on each team on the field at a time. A number of them will line up over the ball facing each other; the player 'above' or nearest the ball, on the offensive side, will 'hike' the ball back to a teammate. After this, that player might choose to run with it, hand it off to another player, or attempt a forward pass to another teammate; in all cases, the objective is to move towards the far endzone before either being tackled, going out of bounds or scoring a touchdown. The defensive side, after the hike, attempts to tackle whichever player is currently in possession of the ball and prevent the aforementioned objective.

Association football (soccer)

11 people on each team, or an equal number greater or smaller, attempt to play a ball into the opponent's goal, while they try to do the same. The goals are usually 2 to 3 yards high and several wide, with nets where possible. Informal goals may be made from a pair of shoes some distance apart or similar objects. Basically, the ball can be played with any part of the body except the hands and arms; the expcetion to this is the goalkeeper if any is used, who can when near their goal.
