I just got some advice on the very thing, work on a combination of doing quick sprints, the jogging and even a little walking. The work out should resemble what really happens in a game. You sprint for the ball on occassion but the rest of the time are jogging across the field into position

Leg muscle training, by holding dumbells and squatting, or by using a weight machine.
