American football -
A game of numerous plays that last for seconds. The teams have discrete offensive or defensive roles. Substitutions are frequent throughout the game. The ball is controlled with hands and is rarely kicked with a foot. Offensive play is aimed at achieving a first down by moving the ball forward at least ten yards within four separate plays. Defensive play is aimed at preventing a first down. Scoring is by touchdown, field goal or a try.
