A run is scored in cricket when the batsman makes contact to the ball using his bat and hits it somewhere in the ground. Before the ball is returned to the pitch by the fielding team, if the two batsmen exchange their positions by running across the pitch it is considered as one run.

A run can also be conceeded by the Bowling team by means of a wide or a no ball.

you take runs by running between the wickets, and if you hit the ball to the boundary rope, you get 4 runs if it touches/goes over it with bouncing, and 6 if it goes over without bouncing.
