The original ball was made of a leather segmented out with a pig bladder inside which was inflated. The ball of the time was NOT spherical not resembling what we have today. In fact the ball often resembled an egg in shape (which is where the nickname egg chaser came from). Over time Gilbert worked hard to develop a more rounded ball. As time has moved on the ball has become more aerodynamic and has had development to make it carry further when kicked.
