A mariner is a person who helps guide a ship. The northwest of the country has a great fishing industry. So the term "mariner" reflects on Seattle's rich history of being a port city and having a great sea-based economy.

"Sea hawk" is another name for the osprey, a raptor that fishes in the ocean. Life in Seattle revolves around the ocean, so the name fits.
