By what I know about the Minnesota Timberwolves on there website. They had lots of teams in the NBA and the ABA. The first team you probably know is the Minneapolis Lakers. Obviously they got that name from the amount of lakes they have their in their neck of the woods. Then they moved the Lakers to Los Angelos. Next for only two months we had the Minnesota Muskies. They were named after the abundant muskies up north in Minnesota (ABA). Next, for 3 months in the (ABA) The Minnesota Pipers were made. I don't exactly know why they named them that, but I believe they named it that after the Pipelines that were in the Mesabi Range. Next/Finally, the Timberwolves were made. The team was getting into debt so they ALMOST moved it to New Orleans (which started their own team the [Hornets].) But they named it that after the abundance of the Timberwolf or GREY WOLF in Minnesota.
The Minnesota Twins got their name from where their home is. Their home is Minneapolis and Saint paul. These cities are sometimes called the "Twin" Cities as they are close to each other and work together.
Following the move of the Minnesota North Stars to Dallas in 1993, Minnesota was without a professional hockey team until the NHL awarded an expansion team franchise to Minnesota. Because of legalities, the name North Stars couldn't be used so a contest was held for what the new hockey team would be called.
The six finalists were Blue Ox (part of Paul Bunyan lore), Freeze, Northern Lights, Voyageurs (recognizing the early french explorers of the area prior to Minnesota becoming a state) , White Bears, and Wild. With the name Wild, being the top choice.
The "Wild Animal" logo of the Minnesota Wild isn't meant to represent one particular animal, but all of the wild animals that are part of the Minnesota habitat. While it does look like a Bear or a Cat, the logo contains hidden components, the eye depicts the North Star which pays homage to the former Minnesota North Stars, the mouth resembles a river, the ear is the moon, and the pine trees add texture to the "wild animal."
