The Lions played the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs on December 31, 1983. The Lions entered the 4th quarter trailing, 17-9, but scored two TDs to take the lead, 23-17, with about 5 minutes left in the game. The 49ers then drove down the field and scored a TD to retake the lead, 24-23. The Lions made one final drive and got into position for Eddie Murray to attempt a 43 yard field goal to win the game with 5 seconds left. Murray's kick was wide and the 49ers won.
