In 1980 a Dallas radio station had a contest to help name the team. 41 people turned in the name "Mavericks" out of 4,600 entries. The committee chose the name and recommended it to the teams owner. The winners all got 2 tickets to the opening game, with one of them being chosen the winner and given a pair of season tickets.

Dallas is a city in the great Lone Star State of Texas!

Cowboys were people back in the day that ran the west w/ Texas being part of it. Cowboys are western so it fits great!

49ers were people mined for gold during the California gold rush. That's why they are in California.
