In places along the Riverwalk the river is only about 4 or 5 feet deep, but the San Antonio River is quite varied in depth and fluvial geomorphology from beginning to end. It begins at the "Blue Hole" north of Downtown, a spring flowing out of the Edwards Aquifer and joins other spring-fed tributaries downstream. The Corps of Engineers has greatly altered the form of the river for flood control purposes. Just south of Mission Espada, about 11 miles downstream, the river returns to a "natural" river form, with riffles and pools that can be over 15 feet deep. From San Antonio, the river flows southeast 180 miles through Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad counties and then forms the county line between Victoria and Refugio counties. It empties into the Guadalupe River four miles north of Tivoli at the intersection of the Calhoun, Refugio, and Victoria county lines. Floods are frequent, and cause the river to run fast and deep. see http://www.edwardsaquifer.net/sariver.html for a great overview of the river in San Antonio.
