for an offence in Rugby such as a deliberate knock on, offside, foul play, incorrect scrummage, as an example a penalty is awarded this can be either a kick direct over the opposing goal posts or to tap the ball with a the foot and play the ball by "running it". A penalty can also be kicked in to touch and the throw in (in union) is not the defending teams but that of the attacking team.
