In the NFL, numbers are assigned by what position the player plays: 1-19: Quarterbacks, kickers, wide receivers, and punters.

20-49: Running backs, tight ends, cornerbacks and safeties.

50-59: Linebackers and offensive linemen.

60-79: Offensive linemen and defensive linemen.

80-89: Wide receivers and tight ends.

90-99: Linebackers and defensive linemen.

Quarterbacks: 1 through 19

Runningbacks: 20 through 49

Wide Receivers / Tight Ends: 10 through 19, 80 through 89 (There are exceptions, Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears is a Wide Receiver numbered 23)

Offensive Linemen: Typically 60 through 79

Defensive Lineman: 90 through 99

Linebackers: 40 through 59, 90 through 99

Secondary (corners and safeties): 20 through 49

Punters and Kickers: 1 through 19

There are always a handful of exceptions, but this, for the most part, is league accurate
