According to hockey historians, the name might have been an English version of the French word "hoquet" (shepherd's crook) or the Dutch word "hokkie" ( shack or goal). The game itself probably combined elements of European games such as hurling, shinty and Field Hockey plus the North American native game of Lacrosse.
