Who won the first Stanley Cup?

The Montreal Hockey Club, or Canadiens as they are called today, won the first Stanley Cup.

What does it mean if you go offsides?

An offsides is when a player enters the offensive zone before the puck. The ref will blow the whistle and the play will go dead. The face-off will be outside the offensive zone, normally on one of the two face-off dots. See diagram below!!

l = blue line ( = net ] = red line X= player w/o puck O = player w/ puck.

Note: the X player and the O player are on the same team.

defensive net->( l ] O l X ) <- offensive net

Note: This incident cannnot occur in the defensive zone. Therefore, if the X player and the O player were in THEIR zone (same positions: one over the blue line and one not), the play wouldn't be offsides. See diagram below!!

( X l O ] l )

What is a face-off?

A face-off is the dropping of the puck after a whistle is blown or at the start of a game. A face-off is similar to a jump ball in Basketball.

What is a penalty?

A penalty is when a player breaks one of the rules of hockey. Some of the things a player could do to receive a penalty are: tripping, slashing, hooking, interference, boarding, or roughing. When you receive a penalty, you are sent to the penalty box for a set amount of time. The amounts of time a player could be in the penalty box are:

  • Minor penalties: Minor penalties are for the little things (tripping, holding, or hooking) and result in 2 minutes in the box. A double-minor is 4 minutes in the box and are for things like slashing or high-sticking (if a stick is used to hurt someone, but to do so is raised above the shoulder.) One player in the box = a five - on - four, four being the team with the penalty. Let's use an incident to help us describe some things that cold happen. Let's say that the Canadiens (Habs) and the Bruins are playing a game. Boston is winning, 3-2, and the Canadiens just got a minor penalty for tripping. the ref blows the whistle as soon as the Habs touch the puck, and the penalty is called on Brian Gionta. Gionta goes to the box, and the clock sets up for a 2-minute five on four. The Bruins go to work, and end up scoring a goal while Gionta is still in the box. At this point, Gionta is let out of the box and the penalty is over. Play goes back to five on five.
  • If Gionta, instead of tripping, got in a fight with Zdeno Chara, he would receive a five-minute MAJOR penalty. He could also receive an extra two minutes if the referee thinks that he started the fight. Unlike minor penalties, if the Bruins scored while he was in the box, he would NOT come out -- he has to serve the full five minutes, no matter how many times Boston scores.
  • The last type of penalty is a game misconduct, and this will result in ten minutes of solidarity in the box, and follows the rules of major penalties. This is a BASIC game misconduct. A game misconduc means Gionta leaves the game IMMEDIATELY after the whistle is blown. Play will go on five on five, but Gionta will not return after the penalty is called. The final type of penalty is when Gionta leaves for the remainder of the game and the whole of the next one. He will be fined and could be suspended for extra games, depending on the severity of the penalty.
