Tie games were fairly common in the NFL before the overtime rule was established in 1974. The 1932 Chicago Bears, in fact, finished their season 7-1-6 ... that's six ties.

Interestingly, the first ever NFL overtime game in 1974 ended in a 35-35 tie between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos. On November 10, 2002, the Steelers again played to a tie, this time 34-34 vs. the Atlanta Falcons.

Most recently, the Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals played to a 13-13 tie on November 16, 2008.

No Super Bowl has ever gone to overtime, let alone ended in a tie. Nor will a Super Bowl ever end in a tie. The sudden death rule is in effect during the playoffs with a slight modification. The teams play until there is a winner. If there is still a tie score (in otherwords no team scores) after the full 15 minutes of the OT quarter have expired, the teams will play another sudden death over time period. The last time a double OT game occurred in the playoffs was in 2003, when the Carolina Panthers defeated the St. Louis Rams in the NFC Divisional Playoff Game. The Panthers subsequently lost Super Bowl XXXVIII to the New England Patriots 32-29.

an nfl game can end in a tie after 4 regular quarters of play 15 minutes per half after than you must win in 2 periods of 15 minute overtime if there is no score it ends in a tie.
