No, and they've only played for one once (1989 Fiesta Bowl, a 34-21 loss to Notre Dame.)

Actually Croswenthy is technically wrong. WVU has played for the National Championship twice. Once in 1989 (the Fiesta Bowl) and again in the 1994 Sugar Bowl. The luck of the 1993 squad was just like the 1988 squad in their national title game. The Mountaineers would play the Florida Gators for a share of the national title but lost to Florida 41-7.
None in football-Went to a Championship once against ND, but lost. Rodriguez would later throw a Pitt game to get out of his contract costing the Mountaineers a second run for the title. None in Basketball-Went to the Final Four twice. Once with Jerry West and again 40+ years later with his son Johnny West! What a twist of fate huh! Not sure about other sports. But I know WVU boasts 15 National Titles in NCAA Rifle, and is #1 in the country as of now, making a run for it's 16th.
No. They played in the National Championship once, I think in 1959 vs. California and lost by one point.
Actually, WVU won the NIT in 1942. At the time, the NCAA was only 3 years old and the NIT was considered the more prestigious of the two events. Early in the life of the NCAA tournament, teams would turn down invites in favor of the NIT. So while the 1942 team was not the NCAA champion, they were in fact national champions.
Sort of. They have never played in a BCS championship game. But in 1988 season they played Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. ND was ranked #1 and WVU was ranked #3 at the time. It wasn't really considered a national championship game, per se, but the winner of the game would've have probably been voted the #1 ranked team at the end of the season.
Yes. In 1942 West Virginia University won the National Basketball Championship. Although the NCAA might prefer that people forget, in 1942 the NIT was the tournament deciding the National Championship. The NCAA tournament was only 3 years old and teams consistently chose the NIT over the NCAA, as they do the NCAA over the NIT today. WVU finished 16-4 and was one of the 8 teams invited to the NIT, held at Madison Square Garden. They beat Western Kentucky in the final game 47-45 to win the NIT and claim to the National Basketball Championship.
No; an SEC team has captured the BCS national championship (since 2007) for the past 5 years; Florida (2007, 2009) on two separate occasions, LSU (2008), Alabama (2010), and Auburn (2011)
they have 25 titles
Virginia Tech and Florida State
The 1999 Florida State Seminoles. They defeated Virginia Tech in the national championship and never once losing the number 1 ranking from pre-season to the national championship.
Virginia Tech or West Virginia. Both are at the top of teams without a title in total wins. Virginia Tech has played for a national championship, but lost. West Virginia came within one game of playing for the title, but was upset by Pittsburgh.
The University of West Virginia has never won an NCAA National Championship in football. They have won or co-won 12 conference championships. They won eight in the Southern Conference (1953-1956, 1958, 1964, 1965, 1967) and 2 in the Big East (1993, 2005). They were also co-champions twice in the Big East (2003, 2004).
