The Downtown Athletic Club of New York City created the award and presented it first in 1935. The award, in 1935, was known as the 'DAC Trophy'. It was renamed 'Heisman Trophy' for John Heisman, the DAC's first athletic director, when Heisman passed away in 1936.
President Teddy Roosevelt appointed a committee to make recommendations to make college football a safer sport. The committee was headed by the Athletic Director of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The man heading the group was John Heisman for whom the Heisman Trophy is named after.

In 1916 during a non bowl game John Heisman as head coach of Georgia Tech, ran up the score against cumberland in a revenge game 222-0 In the spring of 1916, Tech's baseball team was humiliated 22-0 by a Nashville pro team masquerading as Cumberland College. That fall, Cumberland decided to drop football, but Heisman was determined to avenge the baseball loss. Highest combined score in a bowl game: 2001 GMAC Bowl (changed to the GoDaddy.com Bowl for the 2010- 2011 bowl season) Marshall 64 - East Carolina 61
