University of Michigan was established earlier, has more funds, and is nationally recognized for nearly every academic, athletic, and social domain.
Michigan State was established more recently, which translates to less alumni, less money and endowment, less national recognition, and lower rankings for nearly every discipline.
For example, every graduate program at the U of M finds itself in the top 25 (national ranking). Its football program has the most wins in NCAA history and the best winning percentage.
Academically, there is a huge difference between U of M and State. The University of Michigan consistently has MUCH higher student admission requirements vs. State. Consequently, U of M's curriculum is more challenging which equates to college grads that are more prepared for the challenges ahead in the workforce.
A student accepted to an undergraduate program at U of M will most certainly be accepted to State. However, the same cannot be said to someone that was accepted to Michigan State.
Michigan has more National recognition and higher rankings NOT because they have been established for a longer period of time. They have higher rankings due to their exceptional academic programs.
