The odds are much greater for the 2013-2014 season that the Miami Heat will not win a championship than in the previous seasons for the following reasons:

  • Dwyane Wade is older and had a difficult time playing the previous season, and considering how he relies on his athleticism for many of his points, his production should only diminish
  • Chris Bosh has been getting progressively less efficient and productive as the years have gone by
  • The Heat almost didn't win any championships, let alone two in a row (down 3-2 to Pacers, down 3-2 to the Celtics, down 3-2 to Spurs and pulled out an unbelievable win), and with their players only getting older, the odds are not so much in their favor
  • Other teams (Brooklyn Nets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls) have either new players to vault them into championship contenders (Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Luis Scola) or have players returning from a major injury that prevented a previous run (Derrick Rose, Russel Westbrook, Danny Granger)

So, while the Heat are probably the favorites to win the championship again, there are certainly more contenders this year, and the odds of them three-peating are much slimmer.
