People say that a first base glove can only be used on first base but that's just not true. Victor Martinez uses a first base glove as a Catcher because he used to play both positions. It only has its name because it's designed to take harder throws, as the other fielders don't take in as many high velocity balls as catchers and first basemen do. Other than that, it's still a glove. There's no rule stating that only first basemen can wear one or Martinez would have been forced to change gloves a long time ago.

What is a catcher's mitt?

It is much thicker than any other fielder's glove, because it is used to catch very fast pitches (any where from 80-102 MPH). It is more round and short than a Outfield glove or a first baseman's glove. It is, again, well padded, but usually does not have a deep pocket, as they Catcher needs to be able to quickly get the ball out to throw out base stealers.

Where can a first base mitt be used?

A first base mitt is a glove specifically designed for first base. It has a rounded edge (like a MITTen) and is considerably larger than normal fielding gloves. Also, it has a layer of thick padding around the outside. All three of those things are designed to make it easier to cleanly scoop throws from infielders in the dirt. In addition, it has a little extra padding in the middle, although not nearly as much as around the outside. It is illegal to use it anywhere else but first base. Note: Gloves are used by for Fielders - Pitchers, Infielders, Outfielders because they have fingers like a glove. Mitts are used by Catchers and First Baseman positions because they don't have fingers, like mittens. The Coach - Information, Reviews and Rankings for over 50 Fastpitch Softball Gloves
