It is recorded as being conceived more by accident than design in Rugby School, Warwichshire, England in 1823 when student William Web Ellis playing football (soccer) picked up the ball, which in those days was allowed and ran forward with it toward the opposing goals. This was not allowed as the ball carrier had to retire toward their own team to make a pass running forwards was not allowed carrying the ball. This caught on and the rest as they say is history
Its attributed to William Web Ellis a student of Rugby School, Warwickshire England who in 1823 whilst playing football picked up the, which a the time was allowed in the game of football and instead of retiring back toward his team he ran forward (strictly against the ten rules) toward the opposing teams goal line. This new tactic caught on and was spread by Rugby students to colleges they then attended. From here it went global. In 1845 the RFu was formed and the formailsation of rules where created. This formed the basis for what we have today
