The two main reasons are for drafts and also for trading/free agency. Drafts because a pro team won't want to draft a kid with horrible statistics, even if they need him or her. Trading because if you have someone on your team that has bad stats and you want to get rid of them, it'll be tough because teams aren't going to trade good players for bad ones.
