The city conveniently chose to ignore the lackluster performance of the Pittsburgh Penguins during that time in dubbing the nickname. Oh, and GO STEELERS! Although Detroit was known as the City of Champions long before this when professional teams from the city won baseball, football and hockey championships and joe Louis from Detroit won heavy weight boxing title in 1935
