You would have to be more specific as to what year and which country in order for us to give you a reason. (In many cases the reasons were, frankly, kind of petty, like in 1976 when the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan) both boycotted the games because the other one had been invited.)

The TV shows are not real and the actual sport has so much health and safety involved in it these days there is almost no painful moves involved.
