Phar Lap was Australia's Seabiscuit. He was a national hero in that tiny island continent in the 1930s, winning 36 of his 41 races there. He then came to North America and won a distinguished race in Mexico. A few weeks later, he died from eating poisonous herbs while grazing, and there was a suspicion that he was poisoned by enemies who did not want to see him win more races in North America.
