Charles Goodyear did not invent the soccer ball. He made some solid ones out of vulcanized rubber in 1855 in Springfield, Massachusetts, but they were in use long before that. The oldest known ball was found in 1981 on the roof of Stirling Castle, in Scotland. It is made of leather with a pig's bladder inside, and is thought to date from 1540.
