The first Rodeos were competitions on various haciendas. The rodeo developed in Mexico. While Americans had cattle from the time of the first settlers, Mexican vaqueros or cowboys managed the great herds of the western plains. They brought their Rodeos with them. They taught Americans how to be cowboys. Just like happened on the haciendas, the rodeos started as competitions on ranches displaying various cowboy skills. A few shows occurred. After the Civil War, Buffalo Bill Cody decided that he could take the rodeo east and make money. That is what he did. So while he did not start the sport, he popularized the wild west show. His popularizing of that form of entertainment meant that when movies came out, a rodeo scene could be included. In 1929 a group standardized the first set of rules. Other groups set up their rules. Finally in 1945 The Rodeo Association of America set up the standard rules for all rodeos. those are the rules used today. No first known cowboy started the sport. Buffalo Bill popularized it so people would pay to watch it.
