Ozzie Smith was a Hall of Fame shortstop who earned the nickname "The Wizard of Oz" for his often spectacular plays on the field. Smith came up with the San Diego Padres in 1978 and quickly established a reputation for his defensive "wizardry," but he really rose to national prominence after being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals before the 1982 season. Fans delighted to Ozzie's signature somersaults when he took the field and continued to thrill to his slick defense during games. Smith's signature moment actually came at the plate with his game winning home run in pivotal Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series versus the Dodgers. Announcer Jack Buck's "Go crazy folks," call of that shot is one of Baseball's most famous highlights. Smith finished his career with the Cardinals, retiring after the 1996 season and was a first ballot inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
