It depends on 2 factors:
1) The Winter or Summer Game 2) Geographical Factor
The reason for the first factor is obvious. If you are talking about a summer game, it is likely to be in summer of the locality (usually July or August). However, if the location of the summer game is in the Southern Hemisphere (For example: Sydney, Australia 2000), It would be October or so because their seasons are opposite of northern hemisphere.
Here is a complete list. Look at the dates carefully:

There is an Olympic Games every two years and each seasonal Games (Winter and Summer) are held every four years. The years that Olympic Games are held are always even numbered years. The last Olympic Games was held in 2006, the next Games will be held in 2008. 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 - Summer Olympics held
2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, 2026 - Winter Olympics held
The Olympics can refer to either Summer Olympics or the Winter Olympic Games.
the Summer Olympic Games take place usually in the July - September months, while the Winter Olympic Games take place in the November - February period.
Till 1992, they were held in the same year, after which they were separated by a two year gap.
The Summer Olympics 2008 are being held in Beijing (China) and the Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver (Canada).
Other than these, there are the Paralympic Games for the physically, mentally and sensorially challenged. These were started in 1948, and are held "para"llel to the Summer Olympics, and the Youth Olympic Games, of which the first edition will be held in Singapore in 2010.
I am pretty sure the Olympics take place every four (4) years. Except for when the World War I and World War II took place. ;) Thanks.
