While many people would say a life without sports or any form of entertainment would be boring, I beg to differ. In today's society, people have literally made idols out of athletes and entertainers. They consider them as their "heroes". The word "hero" should be used for people who actually put their lives on the line in order to protect their fellow humans like firefighters, police officers, and soldiers. In today's society, people have more leisure time due to the increase in labor-saving technology and so have ample opportunity to indulge in sports, games, and other forms of recreation. In the United States especially, sports and entertainment have become literally the new religion. It can be just as addicting as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and gambling although on the surface it is legitimate pleasure. Anything fun can be addicting to the exclusion of more important, productive, and noble pursuits. Do you know why sports and entertainment have become big business today? It is because people are willing to sacrifice so much for it. Sports and entertainment events are not cheap. They are expensive. With the economy tanking today, people are still willing to pay top dollar to see their idols perform. People need housing, food, clothing, education, health care and transportation. They don't really need sports or entertainment. I think society could live without it and probably would be better off without it. People need to get their priorities straight. They need to put God first, their family second, their work third, and entertainment fourth. People, especially children and adolescents, spend too much time watching television, Surfing the internet, playing Video Games, and listening to music. Children and adolescents need discipline and to learn the value of working hard and achieving excellence instead of just indulging in idle amusements. Parents need to set an example for their children if they are going to be the leaders of tomorrow. Anything you do in life requires hard work and dedication. You must be willing to put off instant gratification in order to achieve tomorrow's goals. Children and adolescents today have become lazy and undisciplined because they expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. "I want it all and I want it now." That is the slogan being preached to our kids today. They want to be entertained all the time and never have to work hard or sacrifice anything. They have too much time on their hands. When kids have too much free time they are more likely to abuse drugs, join gangs, and commit crimes. Men and boys especially spend too much time watching or playing sports. While there are many valuable lifelong lessons to be learned from sports they should not be elevated to the status of religion. Sports addiction can be just as harmful or destructive to one's personal, family, and professional life as other forms of addiction.
