∙ 11y agoThe Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, in southwest Greece. The Games were part of a religious festival. The Greek Olympics, thought to have begun in 776 BC, inspired the modern Olympic Games (begun in 1896) The Games were held in honour of Zeus, king of the gods, and were staged every four years at Olympia, a valley near a city called Elis. People from all over the Greek world came to watch and take part.

∙ 11y agoThe Olympic Games were originally held to demonstrate the athletic prowess of the Greeks to their potential enemies. This didn't always work, as the Greeks stopped being a world power around 2000 years ago. Then, in 1904, the TV networks and MacDonalds, Nike, Coca-Cola and Monster Energy Drink all got together and decided they could actually get people to watch Romanian women who looked like truck drivers put the shot, if they made it sound very patriotic. So now we have Korean Badminton teams, synchronized swimming, and the Greeks are still bankrupt.
